Guide to Hotel Program Extensions During Coronavirus

I’ve published in-depth guides to each of six major hotel programs’ policy changes during the Covid-19 crisis. But I thought it would be nice to create a graphic summary and put the information all in one place. So, this is your guide to hotel program extensions during the coronavirus crisis.

What’s happening with hotel points expirations with each program?

When do hotel award nights expire with each brand during coronavirus?

Note: Hilton’s free night certificates issued before May 1, 2020 are good through August 31, 2021. Free night certificates issued May 1, 2020 through December 31, 2020 are good for 24 months.

Will my elite status be extended with each hotel program during coronavirus?

My assessment

Generally speaking, the most generous hotel program extensions during coronavirus are Hyatt, Hilton, and Marriott compared to IHG, Wyndham, and Radisson. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised with Marriott’s changes, since I find Marriott to be one of the least hospitable hotel programs in the, well, hospitality industry.

I usually find Hyatt to be extremely responsive and consumer-friendly, and in this case I was a little disappointed. Although almost all brands are extending elite status through early 2022, Hyatt is the only one that isn’t extending someone’s 2019 status through that time frame. Additionally, I think it’s punitive that if you have an award night expiring in 2020, Hyatt will extend it through year-end 2021; but if you have an award night expiring in January 2021 (like I do), you’re out of luck. That said, Hyatt still has made some generous program updates here.

Need more details? Want to look at the individual policies? I’ve published guides to all six programs below, and each one has a lot of detail and links. Let me know if you have any questions!

Detailed guides to each of the following programs are below, and will answer when each program’s points will expire; how to keep points active; when free night awards expire; and how long elite status will be extended.

  1. Those graphs are really well done and so useful in conceptualisation of the information.

    1. Thanks so much Martin! This was the first-ever infographic I’ve made, so I appreciate it. I’m thinking of doing another one, on ways to keep your miles active by hotel brand 🙂
